Sure, I preferred the interconnecting world of DS1, but I also preferred the design from DeS as well which wasn't interconnected. Just, on a whole, I was disappointed in a lot of them.) And, to be fair, some of DS2's areas were really great. I'm not saying I'm right, and people who liked DS2's worlds are wrong. The feeling I was left with was that there was this internal push to make the game "bigger", and the solution for that was making areas that had more square footage but less complexity to them, versus the opposite like we saw previously. Design, positioning of elements, texture work, thought put into architecture, etc. They were set pieces for a game, not a world I was exploring. In the Dark Root Basin in Dark Souls, for example, where you can see the Undead Burg looming high above you, or in the Forbidden Woods in Bloodborne where Byrgenwerth lurks ominously in the distance. It isn't just the inter-connected world aspect—it's world design as a whole. After all, in both Bloodborne and Dark Souls, you only need to look up to see what areas are connected and how. It also provides further proof of just how intricate and interconnected the world design is. Then, later on, while exploring the Forbidden Woods, they may come across a cave leading off in the direction of Central Yharnam. Inquisitive minds may make a note of this. Upon leaving Iosefka’s Clinic at the start of the game, a locked gate immediately teases players when entering the next area.

In fact, it features one of my favourite examples in action. Bloodborne, Dark Souls’ gothic relative, is no exception to this rule.
